Audio Normalization

FFmpeg Builder: Audio Normalization

This flow element will normalize audio against the matching tracks in the output file using FFmpeg's loudnorm filter.

All Audio Tracks

When this is checked all audio tracks will be normalized, otherwise only the first audio track will be normalized.

This is ignored if a Pattern is set.

Mode

How the audio is analyzed before it is normalized.

ModeDescription
Single PassNo additional processing is required, the loudnorm filter is applied directly using the Target values. This is the fastest, and will provide decent results but not as good as a two pass.
Two PassThe source audio track is scanned when this flow element is executed, and the measured values are used to build a filter that accurately normalizes that track. This offers the highest accuracy.
Two Pass LimitedThe same as Two Pass, but only a sample of the audio is analyzed for quicker results. For audio longer than 5 minutes, 20% of the audio is analyzed, up to a maximum of 10 minutes.

When using a two pass mode, if multiple output tracks use the same source track, they will reuse the filter and the source track will not be reanalyzed.

So for example, if you remove all audio, add AC3, add AAC then normalize. The source track for AC3 and AAC will be the same, so the audio normalization analysis will only need to be run once.

Target

The loudness target to normalize the audio to.

TargetIntegrated LoudnessLoudness RangeTrue PeakDescription
Night Mode-28 LUFS4 LU-3 dBTPQuieter, with a reduced dynamic range to quiet loud action scenes while boosting quiet dialogue for evening listening.
Cinema-24 LUFS11 LU-2 dBTPPreserves a wide dynamic range for immersive cinema like audio setups.
Standard-14 LUFS8 LU-1 dBTPBalanced normalization optimized for everyday TV viewing. This is the default.
CustomSet the loudness values yourself using the fields below.

These are the same targets used by the normalization modes in Formulas.

Target Integrated Loudness

Only shown when Target is Custom.

Controls the overall perceived loudness of the audio in LUFS. Higher values (closer to 0) produce louder audio.

Typical broadcast target is -24 LUFS, while streaming platforms may prefer -14 LUFS.

Range: -36 to -8. Default: -14.

Target Loudness Range

Only shown when Target is Custom.

Defines how much variation in loudness is allowed across the program, in LU. Smaller values reduce the dynamic range, making quiet and loud parts closer in volume.

Range: 4 to 20. Default: 8.

Maximum True Peak

Only shown when Target is Custom.

Prevents audio peaks from exceeding this ceiling in dBTP to avoid clipping or distortion. Typical values are -1.0 to -2.0 dBTP.

Range: -6 to -1. Default: -1.

Pattern

This is a regular expression that will be run against the title, language code, and codec of the audio track.

The pattern is NOT case-sensitive.

Not Matching

This will inverse the match

Outputs

  1. Audio tracks matched the parameters and will be normalized
  2. Audio tracks did not match and no normalizing will occur
